| Visitors
are greeted by the guide in the main courtyard before visiting the
interior. While waiting for the next tour, visitors can go up into
the keep and discover the museum of prehistoric objects. They can
see objects arranged in chronological order from the early, middle
and late Palaeolithic periods (120.000BC, 40.000BC, 10.000BC).
After visiting the small library,
furnished in the style of Louis XIII, you enter the picture gallery
regarded by Jean-Louis de Courbon as a curiosity in the second half
of the XVII° century.
The paintings on wood are arranged thematically: the lower part
depicts characters from mythology, the middle section depicts natural
scenery and buildings and the highest section illustrates the labours
of Hercules.
The ceiling, with its sumptuous decoration of five painted medallions
against a checker-board background encircled by a carved wooden
frieze, is very impressive.
The central design shows Mount Olympus with its gods whereas the
medallions temper the pagan theme of this imagery by a representation
of the four cardinal virtues. The artist’s signature reads
: “finis coronat opus 1662”.
The visitor then leaves this room, in the south tower, to go into
the great drawing room where most of the furniture is Louis XV and
Louis XVI. This beautiful room, with its east-west light and its
wooden panelling reflects the warmth of houses in Saintonge and
a typical way of life. |
